How Alderley Park Science Labs Meet Their Waste Management Goals

Overview

Alderley Park, located in Cheshire, is the UK’s largest life science R&D facility, home to around 250 businesses and laboratories. The campus is renowned for its focus on innovation, sustainability, and community. Managed by Bruntwood SciTech, Alderley Park has collaborated with Stericycle since the mid-nineties to streamline its waste management process and meet stringent sustainability and compliance standards.

Objectives

Alderley Park aimed to improve the safety, compliance, and sustainability of its waste management processes while ensuring efficiency across its diverse scientific operations. The key requirements were: Safety, Compliance and Sustainability.

Approach

Stericycle was selected to design and implement a robust waste management system for Alderley Park. The system includes a range of services, such as single-use instrument recycling, sharps management with reusable containers and waste audits. With Stericycle’s transparent sustainability focus and advanced traceability systems, the campus can monitor every step of the waste journey, from collection to disposal.

Results

  • Stericycle manages approximately 150 tonnes of waste per year across 500 bins.
  • The system is fully compliant and supports Alderley Park’s ambitious ESG reporting goals, reducing carbon emissions and enhancing sustainability metrics.
  • Achieved a 22% reduction in scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions from 2022 to 2024.

Mike Broadfoot, Bruntwood SciTech Waste Manager, says:

“Stericycle meets my expectations 100%. Their expertise, flexibility, and commitment to sustainability ensure that we can focus on what matters — supporting science, not managing waste.”

The collaboration has also strengthened Alderley Park’s reputation, attracting new science customers and ensuring safety and operational efficiency.

Looking Forward

As Alderley Park grows, the partnership with Stericycle continues to support its expanding portfolio across the UK, including new science parks in Birmingham, Liverpool, Cambridge, and Manchester.
