Clinical waste is the term used to describe the waste produced from healthcare and clinical waste services that may pose a risk of infection, such as swabs, bandages, sharps etc.
Clinical waste management outlines the steps needed to ensure that waste is correctly segregated in the appropriate waste stream for treatment and disposal.
Clinical waste management is an important service that helps ensure the safe and compliant disposal of potentially hazardous materials in healthcare settings. This includes items such as needles, sharps, and infectious substances.
Safe and reliable clinical waste management solutions can meet the needs of a healthcare facility, including the collection, transportation, and disposal of clinical waste. These services can help healthcare facilities meet regulatory requirements and protect the health and safety of their patients and employees.
Additionally, a clinical waste management service should prioritise environmentally friendly methods to minimise the impact on the environment. By partnering with Stericycle, healthcare facilities can have peace of mind that their clinical waste is being handled safely and responsibly.

Different types of clinical waste require different methods of clinical waste disposal. A clinical waste bin (with different colour lids, depending on the type of waste) can be used for infectious waste, non-hazardous pharmaceuticals, cytotoxic/cytostatic waste and anatomical waste. Clinical waste disposal bags (either yellow, orange or tiger) may also be used, depending on the type of soft waste. In order to ensure the correct disposal of healthcare waste, it is important to identify and stream your waste correctly.
Clinical waste disposal bags come in different colours, which each one used for disposing of different types of soft clinical waste. Yellow waste bags are used for disposing of infectious or potentially infectious clinical waste which is contaminated with chemicals or pharmaceutical/medicinal wastes. Orange clinical waste bags are for infectious or potentially infectious soft clinical waste which has been contaminated with blood/bodily fluids. Tiger stripe waste bags are used for offensive, non-infectious waste such as nappies and incontinence pads, or other soft items contaminated with offensive waste.
Yellow clinical waste bags are used for infectious or potentially infectious clinical waste contaminated with chemicals or pharmaceutical/medicinal wastes e.g. medicated dressings, iodine dressings, swabs, wipes etc). Yellow bag waste can be placed into a 770l wheeled yellow clinical waste bin. Yellow bag waste disposal is carried out by incineration at a suitably authorised facility.
Orange clinical waste bags are for soft infectious clinical waste or soft potentially infectious clinical waste contaminated with blood/bodily fluids e.g. dressings, swabs, wipes, gloves, gowns, masks, aprons, and blood bags. Our cardboard orange clinical waste bin, and other cardboard units, can be viewed here.
Clinical waste collection occurs at regular intervals or scheduled times, depending on customers needs. Some sectors require different types of clinical waste solutions. You can read more about clinical waste removal and the processes here.
