Frequently asked questions about waste audits

A pre-acceptance waste audit plays a vital role in healthcare waste management, ensuring regulatory compliance and the proper management of waste streams. This process evaluates waste segregation, packaging, and documentation at the point of production.

The frequency of pre-acceptance waste audits varies based on the type of waste producer and how much healthcare waste they generate each year. In UK, large healthcare waste producers need to complete audits every year. For those generating less than five tonnes annually, the audit frequency may differ.

A pre-acceptance waste audit involves a few simple steps to help ensure proper waste management:

1. Visual inspection of waste segregation at the point of production.
2. Review of waste policies, procedures, training & staff understanding.
3. Checking waste consignment documentation.
4. Completion of an audit report detailing good & poor practices and any actions required for improvement.

A pre-acceptance waste audit is a legal requirement for businesses that produce healthcare waste. It ensures all types of waste are properly segregated and packaged for correct treatment.

On the other hand, a clinical waste audit is a broad term the includes pre-acceptance audits but also audit types with a particular focus such as those aimed at waste prevention or minimisation.
